Birmingham Green Party: election pledge on Birmingham’s public libraries

I do not have the candidates’ permission to divulge their personal email addresses but their postal addresses are of course already in the public domain.

Birmingham Green Party will oppose the closure of or the reduction of services provided by community libraries.

The core function of the Library of Birmingham needs to be managed by librarians and not run as a tourist attraction by well-meaning generic staff. Other parts of the building may be dedicated to income generation only if doing so will support the serious business of a public library.

We do not accept that front line services such as public libraries should suffer whilst the City Council burdens future generations with the excessive and rising cost of loans incurred by Council Leaders on vanity projects of which the Library of Birmingham is a prime example. If elected we would look for ways of reducing the cost of corporate debt thereby releasing revenue funding for essential front line services.
