This event is presented by the Unison Branch of Birmingham University, pitched as a celebration of the importance of properly staffed and funded libraries to education and society as a whole, in the run-up to the University’s move to a new building in 2016.
The Branch says : ‘To give the event a wider focus and to build links with other campaigning groups in the city, we have invited campaigners from the Friends of the Library of Birmingham to come and speak at the event about their ongoing fight to protect jobs and services at the Library of Birmingham. We have also invited a number of poets, writers and activists including Yasmin Ali (writer and political blogger); Charlie Hill (Writer); Mil Millington (writer); Sibyl Ruth (poet) – final list to be confirmed shortly. We will be serving food and drinks. Do come along to listen to some poetry and show your support for libraries and library staff!’
The event will be held at the University Chaplaincy, St Francis Hall B15 2TT. This is on the main University campus at Edgbaston, adjacent to the Guild of Students building, a short walk up Edgbaston Park Road, which is off the Bristol Road.
