Restore our libraries: Saturday 7th April 2018

LIBRARY RESTORATION CAMPAIGN EVENT 1.30 – 3.30 p.m SATURDAY 7 APRIL 2018

The main aim of the event, held outside The Library of Birmingham, was to remind all the candidates in the May Birmingham City Council elections that the strong public support for our libraries, demonstrated in our campaigning over the past 3-4 years, is still there. Birmingham does not accept that the cuts to LOB and the community libraries should be permanent and that we should move on to next business.

People queued up to sign our call for restoration of funding. (See below)

SUPPORT THE  RESTORATION OF BIRMINGHAM’S LIBRARY SERVICE
Over the past three years we have campaigned and petitioned against cuts to Birmingham’s libraries. We know that there is widespread public opposition to these cuts, which have drastically reduced the range and quality of the library service. For example :

  • the Library of Birmingham has been reduced to a shadow of its former self, with huge staff cuts and reduced services. Opening hours have been slashed and the building is now being heavily marketed as a venue for weddings and corporate events.

  • community libraries have also been cut back. They now have reduced hours and reduced days of opening. Professional library staff are being replaced by volunteers and compelled to do work for other organisations, space is being given over to non-library activities.

We will be asking all candidates in the May council elections to make a commitment to restoring our library service. We call this ‘the restoration commitment‘ (see below).

We are asking you now to let us know that you support this restoration commitment.  This will help us to confirm to election candidates that there is strong support in the community for a properly funded, high quality library service.

Please e-mail us, confirming that you support our statement – and please urge all of the election candidates in your ward to commit to our proposal.

Please also circulate this message to family, friends and within your community.

Thank you

FOLOB LIBRARY RESTORATION COMMITMENT 5 MARCH 2018

We ask that all candidates for election to Birmingham City Council in May should make a commitment to restore the city’s library service so that we have a properly funded, high quality local and central library service, publicly owned and publicly managed. In particular we ask:

i) that the funding for the community library service should be raised to at least the (inflation-adjusted) level before the budget was cut by £1.93m in April 2017; that opening hours and the number of opening days should be increased, with at least one evening per week at each library; dependence on partners should be reduced; and that there should be an adequate maintenance and refurbishment budget

ii) that funding for the Library of Birmingham should be set at a level to enable restoration of the original opening hours (which included evening and Sunday opening) and the range of services should be restored to its original level
